Created by Okwui Okpokwasili and Peter Born in collaboration with AJ Wilmore, Breyanna Maples, Audrey Hailes and Khadidatou Bangoura, Adaku’s Revolt is an interdisciplinary performance about one young black girl who revolts against imposed standards of beauty: a revolt against those who normalize the pain that must be endured, against the inevitable physical scarring that results from an assault of chemical straighteners and iron hot combs. Her heroism strikes a blow against those that would have her believe that her natural hair should be a source of humiliation, a triumph against the insidious self-loathing that attempts to seed itself in her most vulnerable moments.
